Abstract

THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORK IS TO INVESTIGATE THE IN°UENCE OF A POROUS INSERT IN AN INCOMPRESSIBLE TURBULENT FLOW IN A PIPE THAT SUFLERS A SUDDEN CONTRACTION. THE REYNOLDS NUMBER CONSIDERED IS 158,000 BASED ON THE PIPE OUTLET DIAMETER. THE FLOW EQUATIONS ARE DISCRETIZED BY USING THE CONTROL VOLUME METHOD AND THE SIMPLE ALGORITHM IS APPLIED FOR THE VELOCITYPRESSURE COUPLING. IN ALL CASES, THE MACROSCOPIC K ¡ " LOW-REYNOLDS TURBULENCE MODEL IS EMPLOYED. FOR AN INITIAL NUMERICAL VALIDATION A SIMULATION IS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT THE POROUS INSERT IN ORDER TO BE COMPARED WITH AN EXPERIMENTAL RESULT. SUBSEQUENTLY, A POROUS INSERT IS CONSIDERED IN THE NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS. THE FLOW LOSSES OBTAINED WITH THE POROUS INSERT ARE CALCULATED AND COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED FROM THE CALCULATIONS WITHOUT THE POROUS INSERT.
