Abstract

IN THIS STUDY, VIBRATION BEHAVIOR OF CYLINDRICAL SHELLS WITH VARIABLE THICKNESS AND CURVATURE IS INVESTIGATED. BASED ON THE LINEAR SHELL THEORY, ENERGY METHOD AND USING B-SPLINE FUNCTIONS, FREE VIBRATION RELATIONSHIPS ARE DERIVED FOR THE SHELL WITH VARIABLE THICKNESS AND CURVATURE. FREQUENCY PARAMETER AND MODE SHAPES ARE FOUND AFTER SOLVING THE FREQUENCY EIGENVALUE EQUATION. THE EFFECTS OF VARIABLE THICKNESS ALONG AXIAL AND CIRCUMFERENTIAL DIRECTIONS OF SHELL ON ITS FREQUENCY PARAMETER ARE STUDIED AND COMPARED AGAINST EACH OTHER. SHELL THICKNESS VARIES ALONG THE BOTH DIRECTIONS PARABOLICALLY. ALSO, FREQUENCY PARAMETERS FOR BOTH CIRCULAR AND PARABOLIC VARIABLE CURVATURES ALONG CIRCUMFERENTIAL DIRECTION ARE INVESTIGATED AND THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED TOGETHER. IN ADDITION, EFFECT OF VARIABLE THICKNESS ON THE MODE SHAPES IS STUDIED. BY COMPARING THE RESULTS OF THE PRESENT METHOD WITH THOSE PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED, THE ACCURACY OF THE PRESENT METHOD IS EVALUATED.
